The Center is offering Tippecanoe County seniors, 60 and older, a free 911 cellular telephone (with extra battery and a charger) which can be a lifeline. Call ahead to 447-2311 ext 200 to make sure we have one on hand for you. We are working in partnership with the 911 Cell Phone bank program which converts donated phones for emergency 911 use. 

The Center is also seeking donations of used cell phones.  If your organization would like abox and poster to collect recycled cell phones for seniors, please email catherine@jenksrest.com or call Catherine at 447-2311 ext 201.

Why Recycle Cell Phones?

  • Over 70% of Americans do not know that they can recycle their old cell phone.
  • Less than 5% of obsolete cell phones are refurbished or recycled.
  • In a recent survey, only 2.3% of Americans recycled their old cell phones and 7% threw them in the garbage.
  • It is estimated that more than 140 million cell phones are retired each year and over 500 million cell phones are currently stockpiled in US homes.
  • It is estimated that up to 75 percent of obsolete cell phones are stockpiled in drawers by people who don’t know what else to dowith them.
  • The cell phones retired each year, if laid end to end, would stretch from NY to LA 6.6 times.
